Project: BELIZE SUSTAINABLE TOURISM PROGRAM (STP)
Country of Project: BELIZE The Government of Belize through the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture (MTCAC) has received financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and intends to apply part of the proceeds to payments under the project Sustainable Tourism Program, to carry out a Tourism Taxation Review of the industry to examine the level of taxation levied on the Belize tourism industry with a view to assessing whether the current taxation regime impacts unfairly on tourism and its key sectors, identifying any inequities relative to other industries and establishing whether the current taxation regime places Belize’s tourism industry at a competitive disadvantage relative to the taxation regime of competitor countries. The review will identify gaps, and make recommendations for tax revision where necessary and strategies and actions to improve the current revenue base while improving industry competitiveness. Assessment and recommendations will be undertaken using guiding principles of good taxation which include equity, efficiency, neutrality, compatibility, adequacy, convenience and simplicity.
